He does 12 hour night shifts with a 4 hour commute (2 hours each way) and often has to take on the shifts of the other nurse manager who is supposed to be sharing the job with him. Now that I am homeschooling our younger ones get to see a lot of him but sometimes our older two don't see him for days at a time or if they do it's literally for seconds on his way out the door. He is sooo good about making up for it on is days off! He gladly gives up his own needs and desires to meet those of our children. Such is the family life of a medical professional!mothergoose518https://www.blogger.com/profile/02058678494556881794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760301880687498036.post-28091957872060600332009-11-10T21:32:54.070-05:002009-11-10T21:32:54.070-05:00Poor kiddo...but look how happy he is about his ne...Poor kiddo...but look how happy he is about his new career path! We have made up several traditions that happen ONLY when dad is gone to give the kids something to look forward to. I know that's probably not possible when he's gone every night like that, though. Luckily, you're right. It's not forever.

I consider myself lucky (in an odd way) because my daughter has never known a life where Daddy wasn't at work all the time. (He is home six days a month, on a good month.) So I don't have to answer those questions... but someday, I may. And I dread it.Jac @ Wuzzle Makes Threehttp://www.wuzzlemakesthree.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760301880687498036.post-43528442655135197452009-11-10T09:48:39.169-05:002009-11-10T09:48:39.169-05:00Jo, it's hard because you feel their emotions,...Jo, it's hard because you feel their emotions, and your own. Then you try to make everything wonderful, and there is still that undercurrent .
I am so thankful that I was able to stay home so that we could have spontaneous family or alone time, and that sometimes helped during long spells. We would take the kids out of school, or have long breakfasts and drive everyone late, etc.
We still do this as hubby is travelling all the time.
